The Kuhflucht Waterfalls in Farchant near the base of the Zugspitze
The Kuhflucht Waterfalls are actually a group of three waterfalls. The three falls drop a total of approx. 270 meters (886 feet), placing them among the highest in Germany.
An information board explains their name as follows: “The name, “Kuhflucht “, can probably be traced to the Romans: confluctum, the confluence of this stream with the Loisach river. The water originates in the plateau between the Krottenkopf and Simetsberg mountains and comes out of several karst sources that receive water from an area of approx. 5 km² (1.9 mi2). The Kuhfluchtquelle, which comes out of the 200 meter (656 foot) high end wall of the Kuhflucht ravine, is the primary source. “
Other historic sources assume that the name, “Kuhflucht “, was derived from “Kuhflack “. In the summer, cows found a comfortable spot to rest in the shade of the trees, where they then proceeded to “flack “, which is Bavarian for “lie down “.
It’s a leisurely 45-minute hike to the Kuhflucht waterfalls if you take the Woodland Experience Trail and the “Königsweg “ trail.
At the upper Kuhflucht bridge, the trail has been constructed such that even less experienced hikers can safely walk to the scenic point with the most beautiful view of the Kuhflucht Waterfalls!
We hope you enjoy exploring the Kuhflucht Waterfalls!
